The Buteyko method: breathing less, not more
For people with asthma, chronic hyperventilation, or a low Control Pause who want the method behind the number.
The idea
Konstantin Buteyko's proposal, from the 1950s, was that many chronic symptoms — asthma, anxiety, poor sleep, fatigue — are worsened by habitual over-breathing: breathing more air than the body needs, which drives carbon dioxide down and makes the airways and blood vessels constrict. The method trains the opposite: nasal breathing, a smaller volume, and a tolerance for the mild air hunger that comes with it, until the reduced pattern becomes the resting pattern.
Whether every claim about CO₂ holds is debated; what the practice does is not: people breathe more slowly and lightly, through the nose, and their Control Pause rises.
What the evidence says
Asthma is where Buteyko has been tested. Trials — Bowler et al. (1998), Cooper et al. (2003), Cowie et al. (2008), Bruton and colleagues' later work — consistently found improved asthma control and quality of life and less reliever-inhaler use, with no change in lung function. British and Australian asthma guidelines list breathing retraining, including Buteyko, as an adjunct. The method changes the pattern and the symptoms, not the underlying airway disease, and it does not replace preventer medication.
Outside asthma the evidence is thinner: small studies and practitioner reports in anxiety, rhinitis and sleep. Ars Respirandi treats Buteyko as one method among several, with a measurement that lets you see whether it is doing anything for you.
How Ars Respirandi uses it
The Control Pause is the measure; light nasal breathing is the daily practice; the reduced-breathing session is the training. The app pairs it with coherent breathing for HRV and with the physiological sigh for acute stress — the methods do not compete.
Reduced breathing, beginner
- Measure your Control Pause first, as described in the Control Pause guide.
- Sit upright, mouth closed. Breathe through the nose, letting the belly move, for a minute.
- Gently reduce the size of each breath — a little less air in, a relaxed exhale — until you feel a slight, tolerable air hunger. That feeling is the stimulus.
- Hold that level for three to five minutes. Breathing stays smooth and quiet. If it becomes stressful or you need a big breath, you went too far: ease off and start again.
- Rest for a minute, then measure the Control Pause again. It usually rises by a few seconds after the exercise.
- Two or three sessions a day. All day: nose only, breath silent, no sighs.
Reduced breathing creates deliberate air hunger; keep it mild. Do not stop or reduce asthma medication because your breathing improves — discuss changes with your doctor. - Does Buteyko cure asthma?
- No. Trials show better symptom control and less reliever use, with lung function unchanged. It is an adjunct to medical treatment, recognised in asthma guidelines as such — not a replacement for it.
- What is a good Control Pause on the Buteyko method?
- Practitioners consider 40 seconds the mark of a healthy resting pattern and 25 the point where most symptoms have eased. Beginners are typically at 10–20. The trend over weeks matters more than the target.
- How long does it take?
- Nasal breathing and the light pattern take a couple of weeks to feel normal. Gains of five to ten seconds in the Control Pause in the first month are common; reaching 40 takes months of consistent practice.
- Buteyko vs Wim Hof — which should I do?
- They are opposite in mechanism: Buteyko reduces breathing and raises CO₂ tolerance; Wim Hof deliberately hyperventilates then holds. Buteyko is the safer daily practice for a low Control Pause, anxiety or asthma. If you do both, do not do Wim Hof rounds in water or when alone, and do not expect them to move the Control Pause.
