For anyone who wants one honest number for how well they breathe — and a way to watch it change.
What the Control Pause is
The Control Pause (CP) is a comfortable breath hold after a normal exhale, timed until the first clear urge to breathe — not the longest hold you can force. It comes from the Buteyko method, where it is used as a simple proxy for how the body tolerates carbon dioxide.
That urge is what matters. The signal to breathe comes mostly from rising CO₂, not falling oxygen. Someone who habitually over-breathes runs low on CO₂ and feels the urge early; someone with a calmer breathing pattern tolerates more before the signal fires. The CP turns that into seconds.
What the number means
Ars Respirandi uses four bands, and the coach reads them the same way:
- Under 15 s — a dysregulated pattern is likely: fast, upper-chest, mouth or sighing breathing. Also common during a cold, poor sleep, or acute stress.
- 15–25 s — building tolerance. Most people start here.
- 25–40 s — good. Breathing is usually nasal, light and quiet at rest.
- 40 s and above — excellent CO₂ tolerance, typically after months of consistent practice.
Read the trend, not one reading. A morning CP taken the same way each day is the measurement that means something; a single value on a bad night means little.
What the evidence says
The CP is a practitioner's measure, not a clinical test, and it should be read as one. Buteyko-based breathing retraining has been studied mainly in asthma: trials such as Cooper and colleagues (2003) and Bruton and Thomas's later work found improved symptom control and reduced reliever use, with no change in lung function — consistent with a change in breathing pattern rather than in the lungs. Reviews of slow-breathing practice (Zaccaro et al., 2018) describe the parasympathetic shift that people feel as calm.

Measuring the Control Pause
- Sit upright, quiet, after at least ten minutes of normal breathing. Morning, before coffee, is the most repeatable time.
- Breathe normally through the nose for a few breaths. Do not take a big breath in.
- After a normal, relaxed exhale, pinch your nose and start the timer.
- Stop at the first definite urge to breathe — a swallow, a diaphragm twitch, a clear want. Not discomfort, not a struggle.
- Release and breathe in through the nose. Your first breath should be calm and no bigger than before. If you gasp, you held too long; the reading does not count.
- Log the seconds. Repeat tomorrow the same way.
Do not practise breath holds if you are pregnant, or have uncontrolled high blood pressure, a heart condition, epilepsy, or panic disorder, without your clinician's agreement. - Is a low Control Pause dangerous?
- No. It describes a breathing pattern, not a disease. A low CP is common during illness, after poor sleep, or under stress, and it rises with consistent practice. If you have breathing symptoms that worry you, see a clinician — the CP is not a diagnostic test.
- Why should I stop at the first urge and not hold as long as I can?
- Because the first urge is the measurement. A maximum hold measures willpower and drops your oxygen; the first urge measures how your body responds to a small rise in CO₂. The rule of thumb: if the breath after the hold is bigger than the breath before, you held too long.
- How fast does the Control Pause improve?
- Most people see the morning reading move within two to three weeks of daily nasal, light breathing practice. Gains of five to ten seconds in a month are typical at the start; progress slows as the number rises.
- Should I measure it more than once a day?
- Once, in the morning, is enough for the trend. You can take a second reading before and after a practice session to see the immediate effect, but compare mornings to mornings.
