Why six breaths a minute
Heart rate rises slightly on the inhale and falls on the exhale. Blood pressure has its own slow rhythm at about one cycle every ten seconds. Breathe at that rate — five to six breaths a minute — and the two rhythms line up. The result is the largest heart-rate variability most people can produce, the baroreflex working at full stretch, and a marked shift toward parasympathetic tone. Lehrer and Gevirtz (2014) laid out the physiology in their review of resonance-frequency breathing.
Everyone's exact resonance point differs a little, roughly 4.5 to 7 breaths per minute; 5.5 is the usual starting point and a 5-in, 5-out or 5.5-in, 5.5-out rhythm gets most people close.
What the evidence says
Resonance breathing is the basis of HRV biofeedback, which has a large trial literature: meta-analyses report moderate reductions in stress and anxiety and improvements in depressive symptoms, with the physiological changes (HRV, baroreflex gain) that the theory predicts. Without the biofeedback device, paced breathing at the same rate produces most of the same acute effects (Zaccaro et al., 2018). The long-term benefits build with daily practice over weeks — this is training, not a trick.
Coherent breathing and the Control Pause
Coherent breathing is slow but not necessarily small. If you take large breaths at six per minute, you can still over-breathe. Keep the volume modest — the breath should be silent — and the practice supports a rising Control Pause rather than working against it.
Coherent breathing, ten minutes
- Sit or lie comfortably. Mouth closed. If you use the in-app pacer, set it to 5.5 breaths per minute (about 5.5 seconds in, 5.5 out).
- Inhale through the nose, low into the belly, for the full count, without straining to fill up.
- Exhale through the nose for the same count, relaxed, not pushing the last air out.
- No holds. The breath is one continuous wave.
- Keep the volume small enough that the breath is silent. If you feel light-headed, you are breathing too much; make the breaths smaller, not slower.
- Ten minutes, once or twice a day. Morning sets the day; evening helps sleep.

- What is the difference between coherent and resonance breathing?
- Resonance breathing is the general term for breathing at the rate that maximises your HRV; coherent breathing is a specific protocol at about five to six breaths per minute that gets most people near that rate. In practice the words are used interchangeably.
- Do I need an HRV monitor?
- No. A monitor lets you find your exact resonance rate and see the effect, which is motivating. Without one, 5.5 breaths per minute is close enough for the benefit, and logging your morning HRV from a wearable in Metrics shows the trend.
- How long until HRV improves?
- The in-session rise is immediate. Changes in resting morning HRV typically show after four to eight weeks of daily practice, and vary a lot between people. Track it rather than expecting a fixed number.
- Is 4-7-8 or box breathing better than coherent breathing?
- For maximising HRV and building a calmer baseline, coherent breathing has the strongest evidence. Box breathing suits focus; 4-7-8 suits falling asleep. Many people use coherent breathing daily and the others situationally.
